I'm so happy to be back on my little space, and a big THANK YOU to my guest bloggers for keeping this place hoppin' and poppin' while I was out. The procedure went well and I'm starting to feel like myself again - thank you to all of you who sent me emails checking on me, you all are too sweet!
A few months ago one of my readers asked me to post what my hair regime was and what products I used. I am by no means a hair expert, but have learned a few things along the way.
I'm the only person in my family with thick curly hair, - I think my mom said my great-grandfather on my dad's side had hair like me. Seeing as it was hard to manage, I had to learn at a young age how to care for my hair and do it myself because my mom was pretty clueless when it came to managing it. Her way was to cut it all off and leave it curly, which led to me having a mini afro for YEARS!
I have used any tip/trick and chemical you can think of to make my hair more 'manageable' but have come to the conclusion that the best way is to leave it chemical free (except for dye because Lord knows I need to cover these grays) and just give it a good blow dry. I've learned that like with anything, when you invest in quality items (at least for hard to deal with hair) you get the best bang for your buck and the closest look to salon hair as possible when doing it yourself.
I splurged on my blow dryer and flat iron because 1) they'll last me for years 2) they give the salon effect and 3) after using them a few times you get your moneys worth.
The blow dryer - I use the twin turbo ionic 3000, it's a few years old and probably ran me about $150. I love how strong powered it is, it dries ALL of my hair in about 20-30 min, which is great seeing as in my teenage years, I'd take an hour to just blow dry my hair with cheaper dryers!! I hated it!
The flat iron - I use a HAI brand; I don't even think they sell my model anymore because it's so old. I got it before I was married - that's like 12 years ago and it still works perfectly! See - quality items = bang for your buck! I think I got it for around $125 back then.
The brushes - In the shower I comb my hair (with conditioner on) with the wide toothed side of the comb and then blow dry with a big round brush in sections. I like the big round ones because they hold more hair and allow the hair to dry faster.
The product - I only really use the Moroccan Argan Oil. This stuff is a miracle worker - all you need is a little bit and it makes your hair so silky and smooth. About once every two months I use a deep conditioner at the salon which makes my hair extra shiny and healthy.
After I blow dry my hair, I typically flat iron it in small sections so that I can reach the root of my hair really good and make it nice and straight. And that's basically it!

I'm so with you on splurging on a dryer and flatiron...I made an investment in both a year ago, and it has made a WORLD of difference in how much time and effort it takes to manage my hair!
Yay! Glad you're back and starting to feel like yourself again! Hopefully you'll be back to 100% before too long! Can we just talk about how cute your mini fro was? So adorable!

I can't use a flat iron or it will make my thin hair look totally stringy and gross. I envy people who can use them tho!

Glad you're back on your feet... and blogging again :) Isn't hair so frustrating sometimes. My hair routine lately has been ponytail or topknot. It's just all I can manage in this heat. But yours always looks so good.

my best friend is a hair dresser so i got a cheap blow dryer through her 'connections' lol and i bought a GHD hair straightener which was a bit over $100 I think. I have an australian one and an american one haha. they are totally worth it - you are right, quality pieces last longer! i can't believe you've had yours for 12 years, that's amazing!
I can't even handle the cuteness of little Amanda!! I'm all about splurging on hair care items. My hair dryer and flat iron cost around the same and I have had them both for about seven years and they're still going strong. Definitely a great investment! I need a great new oil, I will have to pick that one up!!

I definitely need to invest in a quality dryer. I have crazy curly unruly hair as well. In the summer months I basically do nothing to because let's face it, in the south it just isn't worth your time. Thanks for sharing the favs!
