I Vow To...

Having a husband that's a fireman I'm used to hearing sad stories, but yesterday when asking how his day went the stories hit a little close to home...

There was a two year old that drowned, which physically made me nauseous when I heard.  I can't imagine being the parents of that poor child, how do you live after something so tragic happens?  Then one of his co-worker's sons committed suicide, which was yet another punch in the stomach for me.  I just saw the boy a couple of months ago at my husband's pinning ceremony for work - so crazy how you're here one day and gone the next.  It makes me so sad for him, and his parents who are dealing with their loss.

I automatically put myself in the shoes of these parents.  I'm so heartbroken for them - but it also helps put things in perspective.  It makes you realize that your problems aren't that big... and that most of the times that you lose your patience as a parent, most likely the reason isn't that big of a deal and there are parents who have lost their children and are wishing that their patience were being tested by their child - they'd do anything to have their child back.

So today I vow to....
  • Hug my kids a little tighter
  • Tell them I love them more
  • Listen more intently to them
  • Put down my phone more
  • Smother them in kisses
  • Play with them more
  • Treasure all of their artwork and flowers they pick for me
  • Treasure the mess
  • Appreciate the noise
  • Bottle up the sound of their laughter
  • Cuddle with them more
  • Never take them for granted

Wow. It is always so sad to hear about someone's child losing their life. Definitely a reminder to live life each day to it's fullest and never take anything for granted.

Life is so unfair sometimes - saying lots of prayers for both families! Definitely a great reminder to hold your loved ones a bit closer.

So, so sad. Definitely a good reminder of where your priorities are and to hug your little ones (or any loved ones for that matter) a little tighter!

As a fellow firefighter ' s wife I totally get what you're say4. We've actually been facing some similar situations lately. It never gets easier but it does make me much more grateful. Thank you for sharing.

Drowning stories are so frightening. I read an article about children drowning and it said it usually happens when a lot of people are around, surprisingly, but that everyone thinks someone else is watching the child but really no one is. And that you won't even hear the child scream or fall into the water. When you hear these type of stories it really makes you realize how your life can change in an instant.

These are such important reminders that I am always trying to tell myself. Those poor parents. My heart absolutely breaks for them. Losing a child is my greatest fear and it is a hard reminder to hug our babies tighter <3

i have a friend who lost her daughter 2 years ago yesterday....a struggle every single day but reading her posts have definitely made me want to spend more time focusing on the time with my kids instead of worrying about all the little things. The one thing she says over and over is she wishes she had more pictures of her with her daughter.
