One of my favorite things about Summer is that it automatically feels like grilling season! The other day while shopping at Wal Mart, we decided to pick up a rack of Smithland baby back ribs so we could grill some later in the week. We have never bought meat at Wal Mart before, but the prices were amazing so we decided to give it a try.
My husband is a great cook and is known amongst our family and friends for making some of the best ribs - they are fall off the bone tender. He is always asked to make his ribs because they are THAT good, they have become one of his "signature dishes". I think working for the fire department has made him into the great cook that he is today - they eat and cook some good food at the station!
His rib recipe is a simple, but delicious one, and they are guaranteed to fall off of the bone every time - when I cut the kids' ribs to serve them I only need to use a butter knife because they are so tender.
He starts off with a dry rub recipe and then tweaks the recipe to make it his own.
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 1/2 tablespoons paprika
- 1 1/2 tablespoons salt
- 1 1/2 tablespoons black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
After they marinade, he wraps them in foil and cooks them low and slow at 250 degrees for two and a half hours.
Once he takes them out, he brings them to the grill and covers them in barbeque sauce and grills them for 5 minutes or so, just to get the grilled flavor and allow them to get a little bit of a crust.
Don't be alarmed by the darkness of the ribs, it's just the sugar caramelizing from the barbeque sauce and isn't burned at all
The ribs turned out awesome and hit the spot! Both kids ate twice and if the kids eat more than once you know it's a win!
There are so many great rib recipes out there and they really are very easy to make. To find more rib recipes and tips from BBQ pitmasters make sure to visit the Get Up and Grilling website and enter to win a trip to the American Royal BBQ and other grilling prizes!
Happy grilling season!
