We are in Florida - South Florida where it is HOT so we can't grow all that I'd like to grow, but we can grow some things: tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries, eggplant, lemons, oranges, mangoes, grapefruit, avocado, lettuce, jalapenos, bell peppers -just to name a few. Throw in some herbs and I'd have a mean batch of guacamole ;) Not to mention, we don't have the biggest back yard to grow all I would like to, but I still can grow some things and the thought of it being organic and good for my family is a plus!
I love when we go to Oregon, my husband's uncle has two acres of land and literally grows EVERYTHING! They cook and eat straight off of their garden, and dinners always taste so fresh and SO good! They also make their own jams, dehydrated fruits, jarred salsa - everything! It's such a healthy way to eat and live. When we go, it's so neat to see my kids play in the yard and just pull a cucumber off of a plant and eat it! Or have an apple handed to them for a snack as they play! While we don't have all of that space I'd like to implement something smaller.
I'm not known to have the greenest thumb, but it's something that I would at least like to give a shot at doing. There are so many ideas on how to grow fruits and veggies tiered planters and a lot of things can even be gown in containers! When we went to Disney a couple of months back, EPCOT was having their Flower and Garden festival, and they gave so many great ideas on things that can be grown in planters, old tires, wheel barrows, old garbage cans - really the possibilities are endless!
It's kind of hard to see but there is a wheelbarrow and a garbage can that they are using to grow fruits and vegetables.
This is what I have in mind for our house:
I like something like this so that it can sit in a corner of our yard along our fence.
I want to start small - maybe with strawberries, tomatoes and a few of the easier fruits and veggies and if my black thumb allows them to live, then go from there.
Do any of you have home gardens? What do you grow? Do you have any tips for a beginner?
My husband and I can't wait to have a home with a big yard to have a garden. We had one growing up, but my mom did most of the work so I don't have much advice. I love your vision for your home and think you totally can pull it off! :)
I love the idea of what you're going for and I have no doubt that you'll make them grow!! My SIL has a beautiful garden with lots of fresh herbs and tomatoes as well as strawberries - it's the best! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston
I want to do this so badly, too! We are going to start with an herb garden and make sure we can keep that alive and then hopefully move on to the good stuff :) So excited!
I love the look that you're going for. I dont have any garden advice since most of our focus so far has been on the inside of our house, but maybe by the time we get to the outside, I'll get some from you :)
I am all about a garden! I try to grow herbs indoors year round and always have as much of a garden as we can without it getting eaten by deer all summer! It's the best way to do it!
I would love to grow my own veggies and fruits too but don't know where to begin! Can't wait to see if you have success! Maybe I'll give it a try too!

I was shocked to learn how many veggies they grow at Epcot and actually use in the parks and resorts! It's pretty cool. I don't have a home garden but my mom grows stuff in her backyard which is really really tiny! In the past she has used a trough to grow cucumbers and peppers.
What a fantastic idea! I've been thinking more and more about this as well as I've recently had my eyes opened to how important it is to eat organic. Can't wait to hear all about your yummy veggies :)
Love those stacked planter boxes! I need to do something like this.
Such a great idea. I wish I had space for a little garden. Not really sure if I could do on on my balcony. My condo board would probably have a fit. They have so many rules for what can and cannot be on them.
Those gardens are amazing. We have an "urban garden' on our balcony and it's fun. Once you get started, it's not that difficult. I would start out small though and take it from there. I'm definitely not an expert and don't have a big green thumb but that is what has worked for me.

i would love to do something like this as well. it doesn't get as hot here as it does there, but it gets freezing cold in the winter so i havent tried yet. good luck! :)
I LOVE the idea of a home garden. As soon as I have a yard big enough I absolutely want to have my own little garden. I've been dying to grow my own herbs. I love the stacked idea so it doesn't take up as much room too!
My husband has the green thumb in our family and we plant a garden every year. We do tomatoes, basil, pepperonchinis, butternut squash, zucchini and cucumbers. We don't have a ton of space either so he makes a hanginf system so things can grow upwards!
There's just something a little bit better about fresh fruits, veggie and herbs! Good luck with this new project!
No tips for you girl... I've tried, failed, tried again, failed again. Talk about no green thumb. So I committed to buying as much local as I can from farmer's markets. If it isn't the heat, it's the bugs, if it's not the bugs, it's the deer. I don't seriously know how we would eat if I had to rely on growing my own food. Good luck! I hope you have better success than I.
No tips from me, I am the worst at keeping plants alive. But I too love the idea of having even a mini garden in the back. And since we are in FL too when you figure it out definitely update!
my brother-in-law lives in portland, oregon and he has the BEST garden! it rains a ton there... lucky :) my dad has always said herbs and green peppers are easy to grow so we're going to try those. xo jillian - cornflake dreams
Love this idea!! I have no advice on where to start but I think starting small is a great idea and then grow with it. You should also see if any of your local farms/parks have areas for you to rent to grow vegetables. Our local farm/park has it and it's only about $110 to rent the land and it's about 8x10ft space. Everyone loves it but there is a 5 year waiting list to get a spot!
