Coffee Crusted Steak

One of our favorite shoes to watch is Food Network Star, while watching the show one of the contestants (who actually ended up winning) Lenny McNab, made this steak that had a coffee crust.  He explained that the recipe was made unintentionally - his coffee can fell and spilled on his steak as it was cooking.  He said it turned out to be a great accident because the steak ended up being amazing!

While watching the show we were drooling over the steak, and we decided that we would need to find the recipe and recreate it.  We bought NY Strips and found the Coffee Crusted recipe online.  It was the best steak I've ever had!  The coffee rub gives off a great smoky taste, and the most wonderful crust because of the sugar in the rub that caramelizes.

Coffee Crusted Cowboy Steak
2 Tbl fine chopped Rosemary
2 Tbl fine chopped Thyme
Coffee Crust Seasoning Recipe
½ Cup Fine Ground Coffee
½ Cup Lawrey's Seasoning
½ Cup White Sugar
1 Tsp Cracked Black Pepper
4 Tbl Canola Oil
1 Tbl fine chopped Garlic
  • Mix all ingredients together and rub into your steaks. Allow them to sit covered for 1-2 hours.
  • Heat your Grill to high heat.
  • Place your marinated steaks on the grill and sear nicely. Every time you turn the steaks over sprinkle some Coffee Crust Seasoning over them to build a nice crust, …lower heat to medium and finish your steaks to your liking.

Simple and so delicious!

What an interesting combination, sometimes the "accidents" end up being the best flavor combos! :)

I have always used some brewed coffee in with my roasts but I would have never thought of using grounds as a crust for a steak! I am definitely adding this as a must try new recipe. My hubby will love it!
